Chapter Fifteen

Zero chased Roman through the front door. Linda hoped her dog would be able to stop him without getting hurt—or worse, killed in the process. It was a fear she carried with her constantly. It was the price of having a canine working in such dangerous situations. Zero ran down the porch. Linda trotted behind, watching for anyone coming up on her left or right side as she raced into the front yard. She held the gun, ready to shoot if required.

As Roman had lost his sidekick and his hostage, Linda prepared for any desperate action taken by a person whose plan was falling apart. He climbed inside Joe’s Jeep, opening the back door from the front seat. Zero jumped inside. As soon as he was inside, Roman fled the front seat and slammed the back door to close Zero inside. Zero barked and scratched frantically at the door. Now it was only Linda and Roman. He raced toward the back of the house where the snowmobile was parked. She was too far away to get a good shot. Instead, she sprinted after him. He swerved away from the snowmobile by the back door, pushing through the bushes toward Aster’s location. Linda tried to cut him off. But it was too late. Within seconds, he had his arm around Aster’s neck and a gun pointed to her temple.

Linda aimed her weapon at him. “I can’t let you leave here with her.”

Aster struggled until Roman struck the grip of the gun over her ear. She cried out in pain as her fight fizzled out.

Roman called back to Linda. “You can’t stop me. Did you really think she’d be safe out here alone? I saw your arrival out the window. Leaving her isolated made her the perfect backup plan. And here we are.”

She pointed the gun at him. He was right: she couldn’t be sure she wouldn’t hit Aster if she took a shot. All he had to do was shift an inch, and Aster could die by Linda’s bullet. She froze, terror caught in her throat, yet she continued to aim the gun.

“I’m not leaving town until I have what’s mine. We can make this easy or far more bloody. It’s up to you.”

“What do you want? I can help get it for you—just let her go. She’s got nothing to do with this and will only increase the number of people wanting you behind bars.”

“First, I want my coat back.” He pointed the gun toward Linda.

“Send her over here and it’s yours.”

“Not a chance.”

“Then you’ll freeze.” She wouldn’t back down, because as soon as he had the coat, he could hurt Aster.

“I don’t think so. I can handle cold weather. Let’s see if she can.” The menace in his voice had nothing to do with the gun in his hand and everything to do with a complete disregard for Aster’s life. Linda had been to hostage-situation training, but she was by no means an expert in the field.

She needed to understand what he wanted.
